Nothing hits harder in sports than when your biggest rival dethrones you as league champions.
It must have felt like a bitter pill to swallow. Considering the league dominance Barcelona have had over the past decade in the Spanish top division. Winning 6 La Liga titles and 5 Copa del Rey trophies in the process.

This is a bitter pill Barcelona had to swallow. After Real Madrid were crowned La Liga Champions for the 34th time, after finishing the league 5 points clear above them.
Hopes were very high at the beginning of the season as to what Barca could achieve. After the addition of Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Greizman to their squad making it one of the most terrifying squads in Europe, at least on paper.

Reality soon set in after a Messi-less Barcelona lost the opening game of the season, to Athletic Bilbao. Even though they managed to get back into winning ways, their season was far from smooth sailing.
Inconsistency in form and frequent dip in performances saw Barca terminate their manager – Ernesto Valverde’s contract mid-season. The appointment of Quique Setien as a replacement in an attempt to salvage something from their season seem not to have yielded any result.
All efforts proved abortive as their unimpressive performances continued to linger. Barca’s hope of winning the Spanish Copa del Rey was also dashed in February. When they lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao at the quarter-final stage of the competition.
Barcelona were sitting pretty on top of the La Liga table just before the lockdown. However, they still managed to bottle it after the restart; to the eventual league winners – Real Madrid. Which saw them finish the season in second place with their least points total in a decade.
Will Barcelona go trophyless this season?
FC Barcelona is still very much in the Champions League competition. They currently have an away goal advantage from their 1-1 draw against Napoli at the Sao Paolo stadium.
Barcelona is far from being favorite to win the Champions League judging from their overall performance so far this season.
Their underwhelming recent away results also helps to cast further doubts on the probability of them being able to win the Champions League. Since the remainder of the competition is to be played at neutral venues aside from their home fixture against Napoli.
Nonetheless, Barcelona can not be ruled out of winning the champions league trophy this season. Mostly, when you consider the firepower and attacking options at Barca’s disposal. The likelihood of Lionel Messi performing on the big stage as he often does is also afactor to consider.
Winning the Champions League would definitely require each and everyone of Barca’s players putting in their personal best if they are to prove their doubters wrong.
As far as competitions go, this is the perfect opportunity to take a very big positive out of this season.
