D’Tigers’ AfroBasket dreams have received a massive boost with the return of NBA talent, Josh Okogie, to the national setup.
The versatile guard, who now plays for the Houston Rockets, has officially joined the team’s training camp ahead of the Men’s AfroBasket Championship in Angola.
His arrival not only strengthens Nigeria’s backcourt options but also injects elite-level experience into a squad eager to reclaim its dominance on the continent.
Okogie’s commitment to the national team comes after a short absence, with his last appearance dating back to the FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers in 2023. During that period, he dazzled fans and teammates alike with his intensity, contributing an impressive 16.0 points per game.

Moreover, he added 7.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing, proving himself as a well-rounded force on both ends of the floor.

Okogie’s journey of growth and grit
Since his last outing for Nigeria, the 25-year-old guard has seen his NBA journey evolve. After making waves with the Minnesota Timberwolves and later joining the Phoenix Suns, Okogie had a brief stint in Charlotte before landing at the Rockets.
Each move added new layers to his game, and now he brings that sharpened edge back to D’Tigers, who are building toward a strong tournament run.
In many ways, Okogie’s return symbolises a renewed focus within Nigeria’s basketball setup. With AfroBasket fast approaching, his timing could not be better. The D’Tigers have been in search of a spark, and the reintroduction of an NBA-calibre guard may be the key to reviving their identity on the African stage.
D’Tigers eye continent’s crown with new energy
Importantly, Okogie doesn’t just bring numbers – he brings energy. His fearless style of play, hustle on defense, and leadership in crunch moments are exactly what Nigeria needs to make a statement in Angola.
As preparations continue, expectations will rise. But with Okogie in the lineup, D’Tigers can now dream louder. And if things click, Nigeria might just roar its way back to the top of African basketball.
