February FIFA world rankings: Nigeria climb 14 places to occupy 28th position

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up 14 places to 28th in the February FIFA World ranking, NRTC reports.

Published on the FIFA website on Thursday, Nigeria accrued a total of 1,522 points. This is against the 1,474 points totaled in December 2023.

The improvement in the rankings also means the Super Eagles are the third-placed team in Africa. Nigeria are behind Morocco and Senegal who have 1663 (12th) and 1620 (17th) points.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were runner-up at thee recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. The Jose Peseiro-led team were beaten by the host nation in the final just four days.

Meanwhile, the Elephants have been hugely rewarded for their brilliant AFCON. They have moved up 10 places and now occupy the 39th position in the world.

South Africa, who finished third at the AFCON 2023 tournament, climbed 8 spots to 58th.

Egypt, Cameroon & Ghana drop

However, Egypt and Cameroon dropped places to now occupy 36th and 51st respectively in the February FIFA world rankings. Ghana also dropped to 67th in the world. These three teams experienced early AFCON exits.

Interestingly, the biggest climbers are Angola who moved 24 places up to 93rd in the world. The Angolans were eliminated by a lone goal in their AFCON 2023 quarterfinal matchup against Nigeria.

Tajikistan, who appeared at their first-ever Asian Cup tournament also made their maiden appearance in the top 100.

Equatorial Guinea (79th, up 9), South Africa (58th, up 8), Cape Verde (65th, up 8), Namibia (107th, up 8) and Mali (47th, up 4) are some of the most impressive countries in the February FIFA world rankings.
