Lagos to host 11th Access Bank City Marathon on Valentine’s Day

The “State of Aquatic Splendour” is preparing to transform into a global theatre of endurance and athleticism as the Lagos State Government prepares to host the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on February 14.

This year’s edition is more than just a race; it is a strategic move to solidify Lagos as Africa’s premier sports hub. With over 100,000 runners expected to flood the streets, the event will highlight the city’s evolving skyline and world-class infrastructure.

In a departure from previous years, the 42km full marathon will debut a refreshed route. Runners will flag off at the ORCA Mall on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, navigating through scenic sections of the newly developed Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road before culminating in a grand finish at the iconic Eko Atlantic City.

The schedule for the day is as follows. The 42km Full Marathon will start at 6:30 a.m. and close at 12:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the 10km Fun Run will begin at 9:30 a.m. and also close at 12:00 p.m.

The marathon continues to attract global talent with a competitive prize pool designed to reward excellence at every level.

In the Elite 42km race for men and women, the first-place winner will receive $50,000, with prizes paid down to the eighth position.

In the Nigerian 42km category for men and women, the top prize is ₦2,000,000, with rewards also distributed to lower finishers.

For the 10km Fun Run, the winner will earn ₦500,000, with prize money paid down to the fifth position.

The consistent hosting of this World Athletics Gold Label race for over a decade has placed Lagos on the global map for road racing.

By showcasing the architectural marvel of Eko Atlantic City and utilising the Coastal Road, the government aims to use the marathon as a platform for urban storytelling and the promotion of active, healthy lifestyles.

As the city gears up for this Valentine’s Day spectacle, the message is clear: Lagos is rising, and the heartbeat of African road racing is beating louder than ever.
