Nigeria survive late scare to defeat Tunisia and reach AFCON 2025 last 16

Nigeria delivered a spirited and commanding performance in Fez as they edged Tunisia 3-2 in a gripping AFCON 2025 Group C encounter.

The Super Eagles looked assured for large spells of the match and showed both flair and quality in front of goal. Their intensity, and creativity has now pushed them into the round of 16 of the continental showpiece.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who was constantly dangerous, broke the deadlock just before the interval with a decisive finish from an Ademola Lookman service. The goal rewarded Nigeria’s superior movement and persistent forward play as Tunisia struggled to cope yet still sought a way back.

Shortly after the restart, Super Eagles captain and Besiktas midfielder Wilfred Ndidi rose brilliantly to double the advantage with a commanding header that electrified the Nigerian support. Following Nigeria’s second goal, Tunisia momentarily appeared shaken.

With momentum soaring, Lookman added a stylish third, finishing a sweeping move with composure after he was set-up by Osimhen. The Carthage Eagles suddenly looked overwhelmed. However, the drama was only beginning.

Tunisia refused to surrender and finally pierced Nigeria’s defence through Montassar Talbi, who powered home a header. The North Africans grew braver, attacking with urgency and ambition as Nigeria were pushed deeper but remained disciplined.

For Tunisia, the defeat leaves their hopes hanging on remaining fixtures in Group C. Despite their spirited resistance late on, earlier lapses proved costly and they must now respond sharply to stay alive in the tournament.

Ultimately, Nigeria’s blend of quality attack and mental strength told the decisive story in Fez.The Super Eagles will now face Uganda in their final group fixture next Tuesday while Tanzania battle Tunisa.
