Sir Jim Ratcliffe vows three-year backing for Ruben Amorim amid Manchester United struggles

Manchester United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has vowed to give under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim three years to prove himself.

Despite poor form, Ratcliffe insists stability is key and has no plans for hasty changes at Old Trafford.

Amorim is nearing the first anniversary of his appointment, yet scrutiny over his position has barely eased.

His side finished 15th last season, their worst league standing since 1974, and were humiliated by League Two Grimsby in the Carabao Cup this August. Although criticism has mounted, Ratcliffe says United must resist short-term thinking.

He pointed to Mikel Arteta’s rocky start at Arsenal as proof that long-term patience can yield results. According to Ratcliffe, football success is not instant, and true progress needs careful planning rather than reactionary decisions. This approach, he believes, will give Amorim the space to demonstrate his coaching ability.

Glazers’ role, cost-cutting, and United’s financial future

Ratcliffe controls football operations through INEOS after buying a 27.7% stake in February 2024. While the Glazers remain majority owners, Ratcliffe has assured supporters they will not interfere in managerial decisions. He described them as “really passionate” owners who have stepped back to allow him to lead daily operations.

Although his arrival has been welcomed, Ratcliffe has also faced criticism for sweeping cost-cutting measures. Around 450 staff were let go, while perks such as free lunches were scrapped. Yet he argues these moves were essential, stressing profitability directly influences squad strength and footballing success.

United recently announced record revenues of £666.5 million, though the club still posted a £33 million loss. Ratcliffe insists restructuring efforts will soon bear fruit. He predicted Manchester United could become the most profitable football club worldwide.

Despite setbacks, Ratcliffe remains firm in his support of Amorim and committed to reshaping the club with a long-term vision.
