The top 10 most overrated foods in Nigeria

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

From the tantalizing suya to the finger-licking pounded yam, Nigerians cannot be short of delicious delicacies to whet their appetite.

But in all these culinary wonders, here are some foods that have been praised a little too much.

Here I’ve brought before you the top 10 most overrated foods in Nigeria!

1. Fufu

Fufu is just pounded yam with body odour. Now, don’t come at me with pitchforks, but Fufu is essentially a sidekick to the main star of the show: the soup! It’s bland and unremarkable, but somehow it manages to overshadow the vibrant flavors of the soup it’s paired with.

2. Moi Moi

Don’t get me wrong, Moi Moi is a classic side dish that can elevate any meal. But let’s be real – it’s basically a fancier bean cake. People rave about it like it’s the secret to eternal happiness, but I think it’s just overhyped bean mush. Sorry, Moi Moi fans!

3. Akara

Another member of the bean party, Akara, is like Moi Moi’s distant cousin. Fried bean balls that everyone loses their minds over? Hmm, I’d rather save my excitement for something a bit more adventurous.

4. Ofada Rice

Yes, it’s local and traditional, but we’ve had enough of people singing Ofada Rice’s praises like it’s the BeyoncĆ© of the rice world. It’s just rice with fancy freckles ā€“ nothing to write home about.

5. Kilishi

I know some folks adore this dried, spiced meat, but let’s call a spade a spade ā€“ it’s just an overpriced beef jerky. Not to mention, you’ll end up with more chewy jaw exercises than actual enjoyment.

6. Efo Riro

A popular vegetable stew that’s hyped as if it’s the only soup worth slurping. But c’mon, we’ve got a whole array of soups in Nigeria; it’s time to give other recipes a chance to shine!

7. Puff-Puff

Puff-puff is like a comfort food that hugs your taste buds with warmth, but it’s merely a ball of dough deep-fried to perfection. Let’s not pretend it’s the eighth wonder of the world.

8. Boli

Grilled plantains that get everyone raving, but honestly, we could do without the blackened fingers and smoky clothes. It’s like setting the kitchen on fire for a slightly caramelized banana.

9. Abacha

Oh, the popular African salad that divides the nation. Some swear by it, while others can’t fathom the appeal. I love the variety in Nigerian cuisine, but this one’s an acquired taste, at best.

10. Yam Porridge

I get it; yam is a staple, but boiling it to mushy oblivion and throwing in some random ingredients does not make it a culinary masterpiece. Sorry to burst your bubbling pot of expectations!

Now, before you start an online riot about overrated foods in Nigeria, remember, that this list is all in good humor! I cherish Nigeria’s diverse food culture, and it’s fantastic how everyone has different tastes and preferences. What one person might consider overrated, another might adore passionately.

So, the next time you’re craving some Jollof rice or a sumptuous plate of Nigerian goodness, don’t forget to experiment with the lesser-known dishes too! Bon appĆ©tit!
