Tinubu names Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu foreign affairs minister

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.

Tuggar is said to have stepped down in preparation for a possible political bid ahead of the 2027 elections.

In addition, the President nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending confirmation by the Senate.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who explained that the changes are aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s diplomatic strategy and aligning foreign policy with the administration’s economic agenda.

“These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement read.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, an experienced diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to lead Nigeria’s foreign relations at a time when the government is prioritizing economic diplomacy, regional peace, and broader international partnerships.

Highlighting her credentials, the presidency stated:

“Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings decades of diplomatic experience and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s engagement with the global community,” the statement read.


Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations. He has represented Nigeria in several global postings, including Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi.

The statement further described his nomination as part of efforts to strengthen continuity within Nigeria’s foreign service:

“Ambassador Enikanolaiye’s extensive experience across multiple diplomatic missions will support Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy objectives,” the statement added.

President Tinubu congratulated both nominees and urged them to place national interest at the forefront, strengthen economic diplomacy, and work toward improving the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
