The United States Mission to Nigeria has revealed that the U.S. government is launching an investigation into how previous aid allocated to Nigeria and other countries has been utilized.
On January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of all foreign aid, citing concerns over global instability and misalignment with U.S. interests.
The decision comes amid increasing demands for a thorough review of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) health funds and their distribution.
In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria confirmed that efforts are underway to track past assistance provided by the U.S. government.
“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.

Additionally, the U.S. Mission strongly condemned ongoing acts of violence in Nigeria, particularly those attributed to Boko Haram.
“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” it declared.
The statement further noted that Boko Haram was officially designated a Foreign Terrorist Organisation by the U.S. Secretary of State on November 14, 2013.
According to the mission, this designation aims to freeze the group’s assets, curb its fundraising activities, prosecute its members, and prevent them from entering the United States.
The U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigeria and regional partners to combat terrorism and strengthen security in West Africa.
