EDITORIAL: Makoko deserves more than charity

On February 12, 2025, the National Football League (NFL) donated $100,000 to support Kai Cenat’s school project in Makoko, Lagos. The donation was part of the NFL Foundation’s Inspire Change Campaign, following a charity event in New Orleans involving Cenat and fellow content creator IShowSpeed. While this gesture is commendable, it exposes a recurring failure in Nigeria’s governance—where foreign donations and NGO-driven initiatives substitute for the government's responsibilities.

‘We’re committed to values of labour’, Tinubu to China

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

President Bola Tinubu has emphasised the significance of Nigeria’s shared commitment to the values of labour, understanding, and development.

He made this statement on Thursday in Abuja while welcoming Chen Xiaodong, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. Tinubu praised the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and China.

He noted that this collaboration marks a new chapter in a relationship that has spanned over 50 years, which must be cultivated and advanced, as conveyed in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.

The President expressed enthusiasm about President Xi Jinping’s focus on Africa and its developmental needs.

Tinubu welcomed China’s support for Nigeria’s enhanced role in the G20, UN Security Council, and BRICS, an intergovernmental organization of developing economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

“We have faith in ourselves and are committed to promoting our values. China has experienced significant transformation and development over the years. I visited Shanghai when it was just a village, and witnessing its rapid technological advancements underscores the need for further collaboration,” the President said.

President Tinubu also praised President Xi Jinping for continuously strengthening ties with Nigeria and Africa.

“We are dedicated to enhancing our bilateral relations. I appreciate your mention of the UN, BRICS, and the G20. As the largest economy in Africa, we refuse to be labelled a backwater economy. Despite our challenges, we will maintain partnerships with those who respect our values, and China is among them. I commend President Xi Jinping for his efforts in Africa, especially in mobilizing capital for projects that positively impact our communities.

“The infrastructure needs in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, are immense. China possesses the technology that can be transferred to us, presenting an opportunity to make a lasting impact in Nigeria. Our youth population is vibrant, well-educated, and eager to learn. Skill development programs and knowledge transfer are crucial,” President Tinubu added.

He also thanked President Xi Jinping for inviting him to visit China. “I appreciate your recognition of my efforts regarding the Lekki Free Trade Zone, where we are making good progress. We need to establish more industrial parks across the country. Nigeria is rich in mineral resources, and with many Chinese nationals here, it’s essential to foster cordial relationships for mutual benefit.”

In his remarks, the Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that he was in Nigeria to inform the President about President Xi Jinping’s invitation and the itinerary for the state visit.

Mr. Xiaodong commended President Tinubu for his strategic vision and leadership roles in ECOWAS and Africa.

“You are a significant leader and strategist on the continent. We believe that your upcoming meeting with President Jinping will create more opportunities for Nigeria and Africa,” the Chinese envoy stated.

Mr Xiaodong also congratulated President Tinubu on his re-election as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
