Lately, I have been exploring German movies and by coincidence, they have all been sci-fi. Movies that toy with concepts such as time travel, space exploration, astronomy, time loop, neurology, and future technological advancements. Learning the language is also a plus if you are not too warped in the visuals and exposition.
The Germans have proved to be good filmmakers, they do not shy away from plot twists. They have got loads of them. Their brilliance in science is something they portray in their sci-fi movies- it gives the movie an ounce of plausibility and reality. So, watching these movies entertains you and adds to your scientific knowledge.
My top 3 picks for you today go thus. Mind you, you might have to take time watching these movies to get full comprehension. Some can be more complicated than Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. You have to watch to understand. Feel free to go back and rewatch some scenes. You are just getting the gist of the movie by doing that.
1. 1899 (2022)
Everything about this German sci-fi series from the beginning was gripping. Set on a ship named Kerberos, a diverse group of immigrants set out from England to New York City. The eeriness of the soundtrack might just give you the point that their ship might not sail in New York. Some many scenes were shot in the dark leaving viewers in the dark literally and figuratively. At this point, you would wish you were in the movie.
Although this movie leaves on a cliffhanger with no hope for a second season you still need to watch this wonderful masterpiece by Baran bo Odar. Well, if you think you know everything about mind games and simulation, you might miss this watch. But, I bet you do not!

2. Dark (2017-2020)
This is my favorite on the list. This three-season series centers around Winden in intervals of thirty-two years. If you are frenzy about time travels and time loops the Germans have cooked this one especially for you. The characterization of younger versions of characters was perfect such that it helps viewers recognize them even when the situation is clumsy and unexplainable.
Dark has phenomena that one cannot explain. It plays on time traveling, prophecies, and myths, to make meaning out of the plot. The movie makes you question how things came to be and emphasizes deja vu, maybe we have experienced this before now.
3. The Signal (2024)
Like I said earlier, the Germans love plot twists. They like to pull up an element of surprise in their viewers. The Signal is a short German sci-fi series that navigates the life of a widowed father after he loses his astronaut wife in an unexplainable air crash. This movie moves on an unending slope with so many false climaxes. More like the scriptwriter had more tricks for the characters to play.
‘Unexpected threats arise as Sven pursues the truth, compelling him to make unlikely allies. Paula grapples with a traitor during a mission’s critical juncture. Astronaut Paula’s family eagerly awaits her return from a mission, but an unexpected event shatters their joyful anticipation.‘- IMDb
