Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has officially left Southampton after securing a permanent transfer to Turkish giants Trabzonspor.

The deal, announced on Friday, brings an end to his underwhelming stint at St Mary’s, where he struggled to find form over two-and-half seasons.

Although the towering striker managed just four goals in 40 appearances for the Saints, his fortunes changed drastically during a loan spell at Trabzonspor during the 2023-24 season. During his time in Turkey, he rediscovered his scoring touch, netting 15 goals in just 21 matches – a turnaround that convinced the Turkish club to secure his services permanently this time.

Southampton confirmed the move in a statement, thanking Onuachu for his contributions and wishing him success in Turkey. The club, now preparing for life in the Championship after relegation, is continuing its rebuild after also parting ways with several players this summer.

Meanwhile, Onuachu’s career appears to be regaining momentum. Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2019, he has earned 24 caps and scored three international goals.

Notably, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where they finished as runners-up.

His exit marks a fresh start for both player and club. While Southampton looks to bounce back from relegation, Onuachu will aim to build on his strong form in Turkey. His performance last season sparked interest beyond Trabzonspor, but the club moved quickly to finalise a deal before others could step in.

The 31-year-old forward will now hope to sustain his scoring streak and revive his international prospects with Nigeria.
