Højlund’s future uncertain as AC Milan eye Manchester United’s Danish forward

Rasmus Højlund’s position at Manchester United has come under fresh scrutiny despite his public declaration of loyalty just over a week ago.

The Danish forward scored in a 4-1 friendly victory over Bournemouth in Chicago and used the occasion to insist he intended to stay at Old Trafford. He expressed confidence in his ability to compete for a place, even as new manager Ruben Amorim reshapes the squad.

However, the club’s landing of Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig has shifted the dynamics.

Sesko was unveiled alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo before a pre-season friendly win over Fiorentina on Saturday afternoon, a move that will add significant competition to United’s forward line. This development has inevitably raised questions about Højlund’s role heading into the new season.

Milan explore loan move amid financial constraints

Amid this uncertainty, AC Milan have emerged as keen suitors. The Serie A side, currently restricted by the financial impact of missing European competition, are reportedly exploring a loan arrangement rather than a permanent transfer.

Their proposal is believed to involve a €4 million loan fee for the coming season, coupled with an option to make the move permanent next summer for around €40 million.

It remains unclear whether United will accept such terms. While they are understood to be open to negotiations, the club must balance their attacking depth with financial and tactical considerations. For Højlund, the situation is delicate – he remains committed publicly, yet faces the prospect of reduced minutes if he stays.

Milan, who open their Serie A campaign against Cremonese on August 23, are eager to resolve the matter quickly. The Italian giants view Højlund as an ideal addition to strengthen their frontline, particularly given his pace, aerial ability, and work rate.

Over the coming week, discussions are expected to intensify, potentially determining whether the Dane stays to fight for his place at Old Trafford or begins a new chapter in Italy.
