Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has ordered the prompt rehabilitation of facilities damaged by a recent windstorm at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Paiko, located in Paikoro Local Government Area.
The directive came after the windstorm, which struck on April 25, 2026, caused significant destruction, although no casualties were recorded.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the incident as both unfortunate and concerning, noting that it had left corps members and camp officials in difficult conditions.
According to the statement, an assessment team, including the Commissioner for Education, Dr Hadiza Mohammed; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Jacob Baba-Yisa; Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu; and the State Coordinator, Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, had earlier visited the camp to evaluate the extent of the damage.

“The affected buildings are male corps members’ hostels, the Multi-Purpose Hall, the kitchen, the staff quarters, and some parts of the state coordinator’s residence.
“The governor observed that the immediate fixing of the affected facilities in the camp will help the corps members to continue with their orientation course,” it added.

Bago praised the assessment team for its swift response and also commended the principal of Abubakar Dada Secondary School, Paiko, for working with authorities to provide temporary classroom accommodation for displaced corps members.
He further assured the NYSC of his administration’s commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of corps members posted to the state.
