2027: Tinubu endorses Hamzat for Lagos governor

President Bola Tinubu has backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu announced the endorsement in a statement posted on his social media pages on Wednesday.

He said Tinubu gave the endorsement during a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the State House, Abuja.

This positioned Hamzat as the leading contender for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket ahead of the partyโ€™s primaries scheduled for late May.

Sanwo-Olu welcomed the Presidentโ€™s decision, describing it as a strong affirmation of Hamzatโ€™s competence and years of service within the administration.

He said Hamzat had been a dependable partner in government, adding that the endorsement reflected both trust and continuity in leadership.

โ€œFemi has been a reliable partner, and seeing him receive the Presidentโ€™s backing is a bold statement of trust, confidence and assurance from our leader that he is truly the best man for the job,โ€ Sanwo-Olu said.

According to the governor, the development reinforces the continuity of the โ€œGreater Lagosโ€ vision, which has guided the administration since 2019.

The endorsement follows a series of internal political alignments within the Lagos APC structure.

Earlier in the week, Sanwo-Olu and the GAC, the partyโ€™s highest decision-making body in the state, unanimously endorsed Hamzat.

Hamzat had served as Deputy Governor since 2019.
