The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) have agreed to deepen collaboration to safeguard the integrity and security of the 2027 general elections.
The understanding was reached on Monday when INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, received a delegation from the association at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Both parties stressed the critical link between national security and credible elections.
Leading the delegation, AANISS President, Mike Ejiofor, said the visit aimed to close the gap between electoral management and security operations.
He noted that the association’s members—drawn from the armed forces, intelligence community and regulatory institutions—bring valuable expertise needed to maintain stability during election periods.
Ejiofor also pushed for the inclusion of senior INEC officials in executive training programmes at the Institute, saying this would deepen the Commission’s understanding of security risks across the electoral cycle.
“With the high expectations on INEC ahead of 2027, it is important the Commission participates in such programmes to strengthen coordination on electoral security,” he said.

The association used the visit to invite INEC to its second annual lecture scheduled for 26 March at the NAAF Conference Centre.
The event, themed “Credible Elections and National Security,” is designed to promote public trust in the electoral process.
Amupitan is expected to chair the event, while Mike Igini will speak as guest lecturer.
Ejiofor urged the Commission to mobilise key stakeholders to ensure wide participation and public awareness.

Responding, Amupitan described the partnership as timely, noting that the success of any election depends largely on a stable security environment.
He said INEC would continue to strengthen its collaboration with security agencies while deploying new strategies to manage the complexities of conducting elections in a country of over 200 million people.
“The credibility of elections is closely tied to national security and stability,” he added.
