The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended Team Nigeria after the country clinched a record 15th women’s title at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, on May 2.
According to the NSC, Nigeria secured the crown by winning eight gold and two silver medals from 10 events in the women’s division, underscoring the nation’s dominance in African wrestling.
Gold medalists included Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye, who all delivered commanding displays to extend Nigeria’s impressive medal tally in Alexandria.
The momentum carried into the men’s freestyle category, where Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo stunned home favourite Mohamed Mostafa of Egypt with a 10‑4 victory to claim Nigeria’s only gold medal in the division.

Nigeria also recorded silver medals through Ebierelayefa Andrew and Stephen Akintewe, while Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli added bronze medals to secure a third‑place overall finish.

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adeniyi, MFR, praised the athletes for their resilience, discipline, and patriotism throughout the campaign.
The NSC added that the wrestlers, coaches, and officials had once again reinforced Nigeria’s status as a wrestling powerhouse in Africa.
With a record 15th continental crown in the women’s division and a strong showing in the men’s events, Nigeria’s latest triumph in Alexandria further cements the nation’s reputation as the undisputed leader of African wrestling.
