English legend Young announces retirement aged 40

Ashley Young has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season. The 40-year-old brings down the curtain on a remarkable 20-year career.

Young made over 800 appearances for club and country, winning the Premier League with Manchester United in 2013. He also won Serie A with Inter Milan in 2021 under Antonio Conte.

The versatile wide player began his career at Watford. He earned England caps and played at the 2018 World Cup. His adaptability saw him transform from winger to full-back, extending his career into his late thirties.

Young holds the Premier League record for being the oldest player to score directly from a free-kick in the competition’s history. He achieved the feat aged 39 years and 263 days while playing for Everton against Bournemouth in May 2025.

His trophy cabinet also includes the FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League, and two Community Shields with Manchester United. He added the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana during his spell at Inter.

“Football has given me everything,” Young said in a statement. “I have played with legends, won trophies, and represented my country. Now it is time to walk away.”

Young’s final club is Everton, where he has spent the last two seasons. His last professional match will be on May 24 when Everton host Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The Premier League loses one of its most durable and decorated players. Ashley Young: 800 games, two league titles, a World Cup semi-final, and a free-kick record that may never be broken by a 40-year-old again.
