A couple of weeks ago, the Nigerian Twitter community went berserk over tweets made by Aisha Yesufu.
She is one of the conveners of āBring Back Our Girlsā and was vocal during the #EndSARS protests. In the tweet, Yesufu said that the LGBTQ community can practice as far the law permits them.
This tweet irked the LGBTQ community. Their reason was that Yesufu knows that the Nigerian law does not support what they stand for.
However, the Arewa People’s Congress which comprises of northern Muslims literally dragged the activist for the statement, claiming that she condones something that is against her religion.
War of words
Aisha refused to be cowed as the Arewa community became vile with their words. They rained uncouth words on her till she replied them using the hash tag #BambiAlaMentality.
In her responses, she addressed many issues travailing the north. The beggarly mentality of some northerners holds sway in their historical background. And how northerners have moved from their regions to other parts of the country to survive through begging.
This way of life has become so common that other regions see this #BambiAlaMentality as the main source of livelihood of many northerners.
The effects of underage marriage
Yesufu also seized the opportunity to call out the practise of men in the north lusting after female children. In order to legalize their lust, they make the relationship ‘legal’ by marrying them.
Meanwhile, the health challenges young female children face due to early sex and child birth have been a recurring point of heated debates for many years.
