The Alaafin of Oyo-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade, has vowed to retrieve artefacts taken from the kingdom by the British in 1895, stressing that their return should come with compensation.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch is determined to ensure the artefacts are brought back to Oyo.

“Oba Owoade would make sure that the artefacts taken away by the British in 1895 are brought back with some payments,” the statement read.

Nigeria has recently made progress in reclaiming looted cultural heritage, with the successful return of Benin artefacts taken during the 1897 British expedition.

The retrieval of these artefacts, which are symbols of history and identity, is seen as a significant step in preserving cultural heritage.

Oba Owoade also highlighted his vision for the kingdom, stating that he had initiated discussions with international organizations willing to support developmental projects in Oyo.
