Nigerian recording artiste, Burna Boy has been receiving criticism for demeaning the Afrobeat music genre and deriding the culture.
The controversial musician who won a Grammy award in 2021 stated in an interview that surfaced online that the music genre that gain mainstream prominence in Nigeria ‘has no substance’.
Burna Boy whose real name is Damini Ogulu stated this ahead of the release of his seventh studio, I Told Them… The album has been scheduled for release on Thursday, August 24.

During a recent interview with Apple Musicās Zane Lowe in New York, Burna Boy openly expressed his views on the substance of Afrobeats.
The singer emphasized that Afrobeats often lacks depth and substance, characterizing it as a genre primarily centered around creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

Burna Boy pointed out that many African artists lack genuine life experiences, which, in his opinion, contributes to the shallowness of the Afrobeats genre.
He claimed that a significant portion of Nigerian and African music, or what is commonly referred to as Afrobeats, tends to lack meaningful content and fails to address substantial themes.
āNot even experience because 90 percent of them have no real life experiences that they can understand which is why you hear most of Nigerian Music or I will say African Music, I donāt even know what to say, Afrobeats thatās what you people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing, there is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything, itās just a great time, just an amazing time,ā Burna Boy said.
