The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has unveiled former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the announcement on Saturday shortly after being formally confirmed as the NDC’s presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.
The declaration came after the party officially adopted Obi as its flagbearer during its presidential primary, setting the stage for the NDC’s campaign for the presidency.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigerian Democratic Congress, attributing their decision to prolonged internal crises and ongoing legal disputes within their former party.

The alliance between the two politicians is widely expected to alter the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race, as it brings together two influential opposition figures with strong followings in different parts of the country.

Obi continues to enjoy considerable support among many young Nigerians, particularly in the South-East and parts of the South-South, while Kwankwaso maintains significant political influence in Kano State and across sections of Northern Nigeria through his political movement.
Political observers believe the partnership could help the NDC expand its appeal across regional and demographic lines as preparations for the next election gather momentum.
The development has already generated reactions within political circles, with many viewing the ticket as one of the major alignments ahead of the 2027 polls.
Party officials expressed optimism that the Obi-Kwankwaso combination would strengthen the NDC’s position and improve its prospects in the forthcoming presidential contest.
With the presidential election still months away, attention is now expected to shift to the party’s campaign strategy and how the new ticket plans to challenge its rivals on the national stage.
