Vice President Kashim Shettima joined thousands of worshippers on Friday at Ramat Square, Maiduguri, for the Eid-el-Fitr prayers, where he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling the nation’s security challenges and socio-economic hurdles.

The square brimmed with Muslim faithful marking the end of Ramadan, creating a vibrant display of unity and devotion.

Speaking to journalists after the two-rakat prayers, the Vice President expressed cautious optimism about Nigeria’s security situation.

He highlighted that federal and state authorities are implementing proactive measures to contain and ultimately overcome the threats facing the nation.

Shettima also reflected on the spiritual significance of this period, noting the rare overlap of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan with the Christian Lenten season.

He described it as a divine reminder for Nigerians to focus on shared humanity and unite against common challenges such as insecurity and underdevelopment.

“National progress is inseparable from peace,” he said, urging citizens to come together to confront obstacles to the country’s growth.

The Eid prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Borno State, Shettima Mamman Saleh, and drew a high-profile delegation, including Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Ali Ndume, Kaka Shehu Lawan and other traditional and political leaders from the state.

In his sermon, Chief Imam Saleh urged the Ummah to carry the discipline, devotion, and spirit of sacrifice from Ramadan into everyday life, encouraging a more compassionate and socially responsible society.

Shettima also praised the people of Borno for their resilience in the face of prolonged adversity.

He commended the state’s leadership for its dedication to harmony and progress, despite the region’s challenges.

The celebration in Maiduguri symbolises hope as the government continues efforts to stabilise the North-East and Nigeria as a whole.
