Falconets edge Senegal in Abeokuta to keep World Cup dream alive

Nigeria’s Falconets defeated Senegal 1-0 in the first leg of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier. The third-round encounter was decided at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta on Saturday.

Nigeria dominated the opening exchanges with Kafayat Mafisere seeing her goal-bound effort blocked early. However, Senegal responded quickly through Aissatou Ndiaye, only to be denied by Christiana Uzoma’s sharp save.

The Falconets pressed again, creating half chances through Shakirat Moshood and Mafisere. Moshood, in particular, was impressive on the left-wing and troubled the Senegalese defence consistently.

Senegal defender Khady Thiandoume received the first booking after a rash tackle on Janet Akekoromowei. Soon after, Moshood tested Adji Ndiaye, while Ramotalahi Kareem wasted another promising opening.

Nigeria suffered a setback four minutes before halftime when Akekoromowei was stretchered off injured as Folajimi Olabiyi replaced her.

Senegal were denied when Chiamaka Ezekwugo cleared off the line to keep her team in the game.

With the home side lacking the cutting edge, Falconets head coach Moses Aduku made double substitutions after the restart. Favour Nkwocha and Chinanza Ifeanyi replaced Taiwo Afolabi and Kareem respectively.

Ifeanyi made the breakthrough in the 50th minute with a superb header from Moshood’s corner. The goal sparked celebrations as Nigeria finally converted their dominance into tangible reward.

Senegal head coach Mbayang Thiam reacted with changes of her own. Seynabou Mbengue and Aissatou Sagna were introduced to inject fresh energy.

Nigeria should have doubled the lead moments later, but Ifeanyi missed a glorious chance in the 63rd minute after being teed up by Moshood.

The Bayelsa Queens striker missed another good opportunity shortly afterwards. Despite attacking time and again, the Falconets could not find the second goal.

Moshood was eventually replaced by Chisom Nwachukwu late on. Nigeria failed to extend their advantage but remained defensively solid till the blast of the final whistle.

The Falconets will now travel to Dakar with a narrow lead to protect. The decisive return leg takes place on Saturday, 14 February, in Senegal.
