Headies Award 2023: There is still immense room for improvement


The 16th edition of the Headies award ceremony has come and gone, it is time we talk about notable events that unraveled.

The 2023 Headies award ceremony took place at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, Atlanta, Georgia, the United States of America on Sunday, September 23.

Nigerian actress, Osas Ighodaro co-hosted the show alongside American entertainer, Terrence J. The award ceremony was taking place in the United States of America for the second consecutive time, a decision that has since been met with mixed reactions.

Some pundits mentioned that Headies award should have brought the ceremony back home to Nigeria where the primarily fans and lovers of the groundbreaking music genre, Afrobeats are located.

Another set of individuals have applauded the decision of the show organizers to take the ceremony abroad. Some commentators mentioned that primary essence of the event taking place overseas is to promote the ideology and purpose of the culture and musical genre, Afrobeats which has been making waves across the globes in recent years.

Since the inaugural edition of Headies Award in 2006, one of the most revered award ceremonies across Africa has been met criticism and received negative review from pundits, however, the institution has continued to acknowledge the talents of sensational musicians across the entertainment industry.

Although in recent years numerous top talents have preferred to disregard the institution, the organizers have continued to strive towards celebrating excellence and workmanship of the artisans.

Here are some notable moments from the 2023 Headies Award ceremony.

  1. Rema urges fellow artistes to embrace Afrobeats culture

23-year-old Afrobeats musician, Rema delivered one of the most exhilarating award speeches ever witnessed at an award ceremony in recent years.

The singer during his acceptance speech spoke about the importance of unity, oneness and collaboration in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Speaking, Rema had this to say,

“I must say it is very important that I should let everyone know that I’m not here because of the awards. I’m here because it is important to support our institutions. And when I said institutions, I mean the bodies that support you to be able to achieve these major successes; the media houses, award organisers, you know.”

He continued,

“We are in a very sensitive period if we don’t give our attention to our institutions, we will miss this chance that we have. And we will never have this chance again.

“Be it afrorave, afro this, afro that, last last, we go jam for afrobeats award. So, this is our chance. We [afrobeats artists] are not the first to do it. Reggae has done it before.”

2. Spryo is mistaken for Lagos state governor, Sanwo-Olu

‘Who’s your guy’ crooner, Spyro was simply excited to be performing at the Headies award ceremony. The singer who won the award for ‘Best collaboration’ featuring music superstar, Tiwa Savage performed on stage sharing a physical resemblance with Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu.

3. What is wrong with Headies production?

Although the Headies award video production coverage has improved in recent years, the quality of the production has not attained it’s possible potential as of yet.

The camera quality at the 2023 Headies Award ceremony was quite underwhelming and it is only ideal the institution seek more means to improve it’s production. Despite the underwhelming camera quality, the stage designers must be applauded for a work well done.

Additionally, the lightning and sound engineers did a great job.

4. The good, the bad and the boring performances

It became apparent at the Headies award show that numerous Nigerian recording artiste do not know how to deliver a live performance.

While Asake, Kcee and Ghanaian musician, Black Sheriff were able to enthrall the audience with their exciting performance, some artistes failed to entertain the audience. The performance was poor, underwhelming and boring most of the time.

Young John‘s performance on stage was flat and easily forgettable. As for Odumodublack, the choreography was all over the place and the audience couldn’t make sense of what the choreographers were trying to achieve.

5. Asake makes history at Headies Award 2023

Nigerian recording artiste, Asake had a remarkable in 2022.

Following the release of his debut studio, Mr Money With The Vibes in 2022, Asake quickly became a household name, attaining mainstream prominence within a short period.

The singer-songwriter achieved historic feat that saw him become the first artist to win the Next Rated and Album of the Year on the same night. He also joined Kizz Daniel (New Era), Simi (Simisola), and Asa (Asha) as artists to have won the Album of the Year with their debut projects.
