I might have been an accountant or maths teacher if music failed – Tems

Nigerian music star Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has shared what her career path might have looked like if she hadn’t ventured into music.

The singer revealed this on Tuesday during an interactive session with fans on X. When a fan asked, “If music didn’t work, what else do you think you would be doing today?” Tems replied, “I might have been an accountant or a mathematics teacher.”

Tems, who has since become a multiple Grammy winner, has often spoken about her transition into the music world. She previously mentioned that she resigned from her job as a digital marketer in January 2018 to pursue music full-time.

Her debut single, Mr Rebel, dropped in July 2018 and gained modest attention in Nigeria. Her major breakthrough came in 2020 when she was featured on Wizkid’s hit track Essence, which soared to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 after the remix featuring Justin Bieber.
