Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has begun his duties as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations after presenting his Letter of Credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.
He disclosed this on his X page on Tuesday.
The ceremony marked an important moment in Nigeria’s diplomatic representation on the global stage.
It also signalled a new phase in the country’s engagement with the international community.
BIbrahim, a businessman and politician, steps into the role with the responsibility of advancing Nigeria’s interests and strengthening its voice in multilateral diplomacy.

In his remarks following the presentation, Ibrahim described his appointment as the beginning of a “renewed voice” for Nigeria in global affairs.
He stressed the government’s commitment to more active participation in international decision-making and deeper engagement on key global issues.

He said: “This marks Nigeria’s renewed voice, commitment, and presence in global diplomacy,” pointing to priorities such as regional security, sustainable development, and broader international cooperation.
In his new capacity, Ibrahim will lead Nigeria’s delegation at the United Nations, taking part in complex negotiations and representing the country’s positions across various UN platforms.
His appointment by President Bola Tinubu comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking a stronger role in global governance discussions, including ongoing debates around reform of the UN Security Council and improved African representation.
