Joke Silva reveals why she kept her maiden name

Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has opened up about why she chose not to take on her husband Olu Jacobs’ surname after they tied the knot—revealing that it was actually his idea.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Leadership podcast with Stephen Akintayo, the 62-year-old actress said her husband encouraged her to keep her maiden name for the sake of her growing brand in the entertainment industry.

“He [Olu Jacobs] was the one who actually advised that I don’t,” she explained.

She continues: “Because he understood the importance of branding. He was like, my brand has started building as Joke Silva and changing brands several years after one has been using that brand, as far as he was concerned, could cause problems for me.”

Silva, who has spent decades in the spotlight, added that while she remained professionally known as Joke Silva, everyone in their personal lives knew her as Mrs. Jacobs.

“So, we kept the name Joke Silva as the brand but within the circles, there was nobody who didn’t know I was Mrs Jacobs. It [changing last name] really didn’t matter,” she revealed.

The actress’s candid revelation highlights not only the power of personal branding in the entertainment world but also the thoughtful support she received from her husband early in her career.
