Manchester City’s FA Cup triumph has pushed European football down to eighth place in the Premier League. The 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday has triggered a cascade of reallocated spots that benefits teams as low as eighth in the final table.
City won the domestic cup double this season. They lifted both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. But they have already secured Champions League qualification through their league position. That forces both of their cup-earned European berths to be redistributed through the Premier League standings.
The FA Cup winners normally enter the Europa League. Because City are already in the Champions League, the Europa League spot passes to the league. The teams finishing sixth and seventh will now qualify for the Europa League instead of just one team.
The EFL Cup winners normally enter the Conference League. City also won that competition. Their Conference League berth passes further down the table. The team finishing eighth will now secure a place in the UEFA Conference League.
Bournemouth sit sixth on 55 points. Brighton hold seventh on 53 points. Brentford are eighth on 51 points with one match remaining. The Bees have never qualified for European football in their history.
The Premier League will now send eight teams into UEFA competitions next season. That number includes five Champions League entrants. The top five have already pulled clear. Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Aston Villa have booked their places. Liverpool are almost certain to join them.
European qualification could still shift if Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg on Wednesday. Villa sit fourth but could finish fifth. If Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, the European Performance Spot Champions League place would pass to sixth. That scenario would remove one Europa League spot from the usual allocation.
Several clubs remain mathematically alive for eighth. Newcastle United kept their slim hopes alive with a 3-1 win over West Ham. Sunderland, Chelsea and Everton can also still finish eighth. The final day promises a chaotic scramble for a place in the Conference League.
