The contest started as a nervy one for the Pirates who were troubled by Stellenbosch.

Both teams attempted to break the deadlock early but it was the men from the Winelands that drew the first blood in the 14th minute.

Lehlohonolo Mojela’s acrobatic strike sailed into the net much to the amazement of the Pirates’ fans. The Soweto Giants responded well as Patrick Maswanganyi and Thabiso Monyane saw their shots blocked by keeper Sage Stephens.

Stellenbosch sought to extend their lead but Ibraheem Jabaarā€™s effort from the edge of the 18-yard area was saved just after the half hour mark.

Pirates score three on the bounce to turn the tide

Orlando Pirates continued to probe the visitors’ area in search for the equaliser. They eventually levelled matters when Monnapule Saleng converted a rebound after Stephens spilled Deon Hotto’s shot.

It stood at 1-1 at halftime and no goals recorded for majority of the second half as the match seemed destined for extra time. However, in the first minute of additional time, 28-year-old forward Tshegofatso Mabasa, who had replaced Evidence Makgopa, scored to put Pirates in the lead for the first time in the game.

Stellenbosch players, coaching crew and fans were stunned and left in disbelief. But Olisa Ndah’s teammates were not done yet, netting another five minutes later to complete the victory.

Relebohile Mofokeng, who had assisted Mabasa’s goal, scored the third to secure Orlando Pirates title victory – Mabasa returning the favour for the 19-year-old.

Ndah, who once played for Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Akwa United, missed the game between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch.
