Leading Stories: UI Students protest for the second time against hike in tuition fee, university management sends them home
Aluta Continua is a term that UI students have given serious thought to in the 2023ā2024 academic year. The increase in tuition fees, which is a common occurrence in nearly all federal universities, has prompted students to demonstrate displeasuretwice on campus.
When the management refused to lower the tuition, their initial protest proved to be ineffective. The first protest concluded with a resolution urging all students to postpone paying fees while the tuition was reviewed. However, later on, the tuition review felt like a broken pledge.
The management sent out a memo earlier this week stating that all students must pay their fees by Thursday, August 29 at the latest. The second protest was in response to the news that most students could not afford to pay, which upset them.
The second protest’s outcome rocked the foundations. At Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, the VC met with students to hear their agitation. The academic head gave the students a three-week ultimatum to pay their fees and threatened to close the school if there was any protest.
Exams were originally scheduled to begin the following week, but they have been postponed until further notice because of the unrest. The last straw that broke the camel’s back was when the administration of the university gave students a six-hour notice to leave the campus on Saturday , August 31,2024.
