Omoni Oboli explains why popular actors dominate Nollywood

Nollywood filmmaker and actress Omoni Oboli has shared her perspective on the repeated use of well-known actors in Nigerian films, noting that it mirrors a trend observed in film industries worldwide.

In a recent interview, Oboli explained that audiences naturally gravitate toward familiar faces, which is why filmmakers often opt for popular actors to boost a movie’s appeal and commercial success.

“All over the world, people build their careers to become household names because the more recognisable you are, the more jobs you get. It’s not unique to Nollywood. Audiences have their favourites, and they want to see them,” she said.

She noted that while producers may favour recognisable talent, the industry also plays a significant role in creating stars by giving emerging actors repeated exposure, helping them rise through the ranks.

“It’s not wrong to say filmmakers use popular faces. Viewers often decide to watch a movie because they recognize who’s on the poster. Just like people buy products from those they know, like, and trust, it’s the same with movies,” she added.

Oboli also highlighted that actors themselves are aware of this reality and strive to become popular because it increases their chances of landing roles. “We don’t just rely on stars, we create them too. And once they become favorites, the entire industry benefits,” she concluded.
