The Oyo State Government on Monday launched a joint task force to curb illegal mining and enforce Executive Order 001/2023.
The initiative marks a decisive move against unauthorised mining operations and non-compliance with existing mining regulations. According to the government, the effort will help in the fight against illegal mining and safeguard host communities from possible attacks.
The launch took place at Babaaro in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area, and at Iseyin City Hall, Iseyin Local Government Area.
The Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Abiodun Oni, emphasised the government’s zero-tolerance stance. “The state would no longer tolerate illegal mining activities. The task force has come to stay in this state. Anyone found engaging in illegal mining will be held accountable and prosecuted. The law will take its full course.”
He urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. “If you see something, say something. We must all join hands together to curb this menace,” he said.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Olufunke Omidiran, described the initiative as a strategic response to the rising threat of illegal mining. She said the task force is properly equipped and charged with promoting responsible mining and environmental care.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Migrant and Homeland Security, Segun Adegoke, explained that the task force includes all constitutionally recognised security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps. “Oyo is tackling the problem head-on,” he said.
To further strengthen the initiative, the government has commenced the full enforcement of Executive Order 001/2023. The order requires all mining stakeholders and host communities to comply with provisions such as the signing of consent letters and community development agreements, in accordance with the Nigerian Mining Act.
