Pope Leo Vix has expressed concern over what he described as the weakening of international and humanitarian law.

He warned that the growing pursuit of power at the expense of others is both disgraceful and damaging to humanity.

In a statement posted on his X page on Thursday, he lamented that the principles which should govern international relations and protect human dignity are increasingly being ignored.

“It is disheartening to see today that the strength of international law and humanitarian law no longer seems binding, replaced by the presumed right to overpower others. This is unworthy and shameful for humanity and for the leaders of nations,” he said.

Addressing Christians worldwide, Pope Leo Vix urged believers to respond to hatred and violence with prayer, compassion, and faithful witness.

“In the face of hatred and violence, what can we Christians do? First of all, we must pray. It is up to us to turn every tragic news story and image that touches us into a cry of intercession to God.

“Then, we must help others. But there is more—there is witness, our call to remain faithful to Jesus, who conquered evil by loving from the cross,” he emphasised.

The Pope also challenged the notion that warfare can ever secure lasting peace.

“How can we believe, after centuries of history, that acts of war bring peace and do not turn against those who wage them? How can we hope to lay the foundations of tomorrow without cohesion and a shared vision inspired by the common good?” he asked.

His remarks come at a time when global conflicts continue to escalate, raising concerns over the erosion of international cooperation and humanitarian principles.
