Tinubu hails Wole Soyinka on his 89th birthday, lauds his contributions to democracy and literature

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his congratulations to Wole Soyinka, the Nobel laureate, on the occasion of his 89th birthday celebration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Dele Alake, the special adviser on special duties, communications, and strategy, conveyed the president’s admiration for Soyinka, recognizing him as a significant source of support, inspiration, and motivation for numerous individuals.

Tinubu, referring to Soyinka as a symbol of strength, durability, and resistance, likened him to the African Iroko tree.

The president acknowledged the Nobel laureate’s unwavering commitment to the restoration and establishment of democracy and good governance in Nigeria, lauding his substantial contributions to the nation’s progress.

The president’s statement reads, “Today, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to Prof. Wole Soyinka, a Nobel Laureate, elder statesman, and pro-democracy activist, on reaching the milestone of 89 years. Prof. Wole Soyinka, a renowned playwright, poet, and novelist, has made remarkable contributions to Nigeria. In the realm of literature, he stands as a towering figure, akin to the mighty Iroko tree.”

Tinubu emphasized the lasting impact of Soyinka’s endeavors in the pursuit of democracy and good governance in Nigeria:

“Crucially, his indelible contributions to the struggle for the restoration and institutionalization of democracy and good governance in Nigeria cannot be overlooked. Together, alongside other activists, we risked our personal lives in the fight for democracy under the umbrella of NADECO.”

The president expressed his belief that Soyinka remains an unwavering beacon of inspiration and support for many. Tinubu extended his prayers for longevity and vitality, hoping that Soyinka will continue to contribute to both national and international discussions.

“We fervently pray that the Almighty bestows upon him more years and strength, allowing him to witness the new Nigeria we are tirelessly building in accordance with our vision for a rejuvenated future, where security, prosperity, and economic development prevail.”
