AC Milan’s highly anticipated move for Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has fallen through after the forward reportedly failed his medical.
The collapse marks a stunning twist in what was expected to be one of the biggest Nigerian football transfer stories of the summer.
The 23-year-old Super Eagles forward had jetted into Italy in the last 48 hours amid growing excitement from fans and media alike. Reports suggested Milan struck agreement with Bayer Leverkusen involving a €5 million loan fee and a €24 million buy option. For many, it looked like a done deal.
However, the optimism quickly faded as Boniface’s medical examinations raised concerns about his fitness levels. Although details of the setback remain undisclosed, Milan’s medical team advised against completing the transfer. This has forced the club to abruptly call off the move.

Medical blow halts Boniface’s proposed move
The decision comes as a significant blow for Milan, who had identified Boniface as the perfect replacement for Olivier Giroud. The French striker now plies his trade in the United States’ Major League Soccer.
Boniface, fresh off a stellar past two seasons in Germany where he powered Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title and starred in the UEFA Europa League, was expected to bring both firepower and flair to the Rossoneri attack.
Yet, despite his recent achievements, Milan refused to take any risks with the fitness concerns flagged during his medical.
Consequently, the Rossoneri will now be forced back into the transfer market in search of another striker before Serie A resumes later this month.
Meanwhile, Boniface faces the difficult task of regrouping as he returns to Germany. Although disappointment lingers, the forward is still attracting attention from several European suitors who are closely monitoring his condition.
Uncertainty for Boniface, heartbreak for Nigerian fans
For Nigerian supporters, the failed move represents a crushing disappointment. Many were eager to see Boniface join the exclusive list of Super Eagles stars who once graced the iconic Rossoneri jersey. They include Taribo West, Taye Taiwo, and Nnamdi Oduamadi. Instead, fans now wait and hope the striker can rediscover fitness and secure his dream transfer in the near future.
Nevertheless, Boniface’s future remains far from bleak. Given his remarkable rise in Germany and his proven ability to deliver on the big stage, another opportunity in Europe could emerge sooner than expected.
