William Troost-Ekong – Watford star centre back


This is probably not the best time to write an article about a Super Eagles player. After a lacklustre 1-0 loss to the Central African Republic. However, super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, is such an interesting and inspiring person worth looking into.

William Paul Troost-Ekong is a professional footballer who plays as a centre back for English Premier League side Watford and the Nigerian national team.

He joined Watford from Serie A side Udinese in September, 2020 after a series of spells in Netherlands and Belgium, and helped the English side gain promotion back into the top flight after making 33 appearances for the club.

William has been a key player in the club since his arrival, and has featured in all their league games so far this season.

On the international front, Troost-Ekong first featured for the Netherland’s U19 and U20 sides as he was eligible by birth. Making 3 appearances for the Dutch in the process.

William has since switched allegiance to Nigeria. And he was part of the Nigeria U-23 team, that won bronze at the 2016 summer Olympics.

He was also part of the Super Eagles team that won bronze at the 2019 African Cup of Nations. Troost-Ekong is currently the captain of the Super Eagles, and has said switching to the Nigerian national team has been the best decision in his career.

Troost-Ekong was born on September 1, 1993, and has dual nationality. As he was born to a Nigerian father from Akwa Ibom and a Dutch mother, Eleanor Troost.

He was born in Haarlem, Netherlands and has 2 siblings, Emily and Everest. He grew up in Netherlands, just outside Amsterdam and made regular visits to Lagos, Nigeria.

The Super Eagles star leads a life envied by many as he earns around £14,000 weekly wages. For his services at Watford football club and has other sources of income from advertisements and endorsement deals with the likes of adidas and TAG Heuer as brand ambassadors.

William Troost-Ekong also has a YouTube channel, with over 56.7k subscribers after being encouraged and inspired by England and Watford teammate, Ben Forster, who also has massive following on YouTube, with over 800k subscribers.
