5 Types of People at The Experience

The Experience

Praising God is the habit for many and there are many places we can get so done: church, home, or even at a gospel concert. The Experience – a yearly musical concert held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos – is aimed at uniting worshippers from all spheres of life.

Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House On The Rock is the host of The Experience. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its 15th edition will be held virtually today, 11 December.

The previous 14 editions always had tens of thousands in attendance. Today’s concert is tagged the ‘global edition’ and it is expected that millions will be watching worldwide via live streaming and social media.

Having attended a few editions, I bring you my observations on five groups of people you are likely to meet at The Experience.

1. The true worshipper

This type of attendee is focused throughout the concert, making sure to avoid any form of distraction. The true worshipper comes to the event with an expectation from God.

The concert is an avenue for them to communicate with their Maker. They are not selective of any performer. Any artiste that comes on stage excites them and they believe that they will not go home the same way they came.

2. The fun seeker

The fun seeker sees The Experience as an arena for fun. Going with a group of friends is non-negotiable and you will see them having animated conversations about the various artistes during intervals.

The fun seeker is friendly and makes friends easily with other attendees. There is no dull moment for them and they bring their own vibe to the event.

3. The critic

Some turn up at The Experience to observe and assess the event. They start with the behaviour of fellow attendees at the point of entry, to the layout of the venue, to the order of appearance of the artistes.

They assess the appearance of everyone that comes on stage and even the backing vocals are not spared. They disapprove of the manner in which the artistes perform if it falls below their expectations.

Any interference with sound will be a cause for complaint. They might even vocalize their displeasure at why the church would spend so much on a concert when millions in the country are unemployed. Despite their yearly dissatisfaction, the critic continues to attend.

4. The nonchalant

There are many folks who attend for no apparent reason. Perhaps it’s just something to do to while away time.

Because of a lack of purpose for attending, the nonchalant attendee tends to be a noise-maker and a make-shift comedian. They chip in with hilarious statements that often elicit laughter from the crowd.

They are out to have fun in a ‘non-religious’ way and in a bid to create fun at the concert, they end up as the event’s unofficial jester.

5. The trader

Vendors are one of the major side attractions at The Experience. They fill the arena with their wares.

The concert is not complete without the trader. From drinks to snacks, vendors are on standby and willing to meet the needs of anyone and everyone that needs their products.

Without the trader, many attendees of The Experience will definitely go hungry.

There are more categories of people who attend this concert, including those who keep seats for those still at home or at their offices.
