Fela makes history as first African to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Legendary Nigerian music icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Fela is set to be recognised in the early influence category this year, alongside notable figures such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz.

The list of honourees was announced on Monday night in the United States during a broadcast of American Idol.

Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu will also be celebrated, earning recognition in the performance category.

Meanwhile, stars including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink did not make the final list despite receiving nominations.

More than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry experts participated in the voting process that determined this year’s inductees.

The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

News Round The Clock recalls that earlier this year, Fela also made history as the first African musician to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
