Police arrest 780 as PSG UCL celebrations turn violent across France

French authorities have confirmed that 780 people were arrested across France after celebrations marking Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal were overshadowed by violent clashes and a fatal road accident.

Thousands of supporters had taken to the streets of Paris to celebrate PSG’s triumph, but the festivities later descended into chaos as groups clashed with police forces deployed nationwide to maintain order.

Authorities said around 22,000 police officers were stationed across the country, following similar unrest recorded during last year’s celebrations when PSG also secured the title.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, speaking at a press briefing, said the situation involved significant violence, including the use of fireworks directed at security personnel. He added that 57 members of the security forces were injured, while “219 participants injured in France, including eight seriously”.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office also confirmed the death of a young man following a motocross bike accident on the Paris ring road. It further reported that another person was attacked with a bladed weapon in the capital and remains in critical condition.

Nunez noted that the 780 arrests represented a 32 percent increase compared to arrests recorded during last year’s PSG Champions League celebrations.

The incidents highlight recurring concerns over crowd control and public safety during major football celebrations in France, even as PSG’s victory was widely celebrated by fans across the country.
