An overnight flood caused by heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of at least 21 people and left many others missing in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The disaster, which struck in the middle of the night, left residents of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities in shock as their homes were swallowed by rushing water.
The flood followed hours of intense rainfall on Tuesday night, catching people off guard while they were asleep.
Around 50 houses were destroyed, with entire families swept away.
The force of the water also affected several vehicles, including private cars, commercial buses, and trucks, leaving drivers and passengers stranded in deep water with no help in sight.
So far, 21 bodies have been pulled from the water, including that of a woman and her two children.
Rescue teams, including local divers and volunteers, have been working with emergency officials to continue the search for more victims.
Many are still missing, and the full number of casualties is not yet known.
At Mokwa General Hospital, survivors are receiving treatment for injuries and trauma.
Among them is the woman who lost her children but was found alive.
Health workers are also attending to others injured in the disaster.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has joined hands with the local government to respond to the tragedy.
They confirmed the disaster and described the rainfall as extremely heavy, lasting several hours and strong enough to destroy homes and displace residents.
Search and rescue efforts are still going on as families and emergency workers hope to find more people alive.
