Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has opened up about his decision to step into partisan politics, citing concerns about Nigeria’s direction and governance.
Speaking during a recent interview on Naija FM Lagos, the 31-year-old said his motivation stems largely from a desire to be part of the country’s policymaking process. He expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as poor policy decisions by the current political class, noting that their outcomes affect him just like every other citizen.
Oworu said he has witnessed a steady decline in national development over the years and feels compelled to contribute to efforts aimed at reversing the trend. According to him, his long-term vision of building a family in Nigeria further strengthened his resolve to get involved in shaping the country’s future.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here.
“So, I have to make sure that I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy that is being enacted, it would ultimately, affect me like every other common person.
“And also, most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he explained.
In the 2023 general elections, Oworu contested for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere Constituency 1 under the Labour Party. However, he was defeated by fellow actor-turned-lawmaker Desmond Elliott.
Despite the electoral loss, the actor has maintained that his political ambition remains intact.
