Remo Stars react to NPFL relegation, promise immediate rebuild

Former Nigeria Premier Football League champions Remo Stars F.C. have reacted to their relegation from the top flight, describing the outcome as painful while promising a swift return to the NPFL.

Their relegation was confirmed on Sunday after a 1-1 draw with Bendel Insurance F.C. in Benin City.

Remo Stars took the lead through Victor Mbaoma just before half-time and were close to securing a vital win. However, their survival hopes were dashed in stoppage time when Chijioke Akuneto equalised for Bendel Insurance to ensure a 1-1 draw.

The result was enough to push them into the second division after the postponed clash between Kun Khalifat F.C. and Wikki Tourists F.C. ended 3-1 in favour of the newcomers, sealing Remo Starsโ€™ fate.

The Sky Blue Stars endured a difficult campaign, finishing with 47 points from 38 matches, just a season after winning the league title. The club admitted they fell short of expectations throughout the season.

โ€œWe understand the disappointment and frustration this season has brought. We did not deliver the performances or consistency required to maintain our place in the division. We take full responsibility for that failure.โ€™โ€™

The club also appreciated fans for their support despite the poor run of results.

โ€œTo our fans who filled the stands, supported the team online and stood by us even during our darkest moments, thank you. Your loyalty means everything, and we recognise that we owe you much more than what this season produced.

โ€œOur focus now turns towards rebuilding with purpose and determination. Important decisions will be made, and every effort will be directed towards returning this club to where it belongs.โ€

Remo Starsโ€™ relegation makes them the first defending NPFL champions to drop to the second tier since Bayelsa United in 2009/10, and only the fourth in league history to suffer relegation while defending their title.
