As the political atmosphere in Ogun State heats up ahead of the 2027 general elections, Segun Showunmi, a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced his intention to contest the governorship, presenting his aspiration as a “solemn call to duty” rather than personal ambition.
In a statement posted on his X page entitled “Duty, Not Ambition: Why Ogun Must Choose Intention Over Impulse” on Wednesday, Showunmi urged the electorate to scrutinise the motivations of aspirants for the state’s top office.
He warned that Ogun, a strategic hub of industry and intellect, cannot afford to be treated as an “experiment” for opportunistic politicians or candidates motivated by family pressures.
Showunmi criticised the prevailing political climate, which he described as a “marketplace of ambitions,” where leadership is treated as a trophy.
He argued that governing a state pivotal to Nigeria’s economic transformation requires foresight, preparedness, and a profound sense of responsibility.

“Leadership is not a seasonal performance dictated by election cycles; it is a continuous engagement with ideas, people, and possibilities.”

Positioning himself as a patriot rather than a seeker of power, Showunmi outlined a three-fold commitment forming the core of his platform: leading with purpose for the resilient people of Ogun, unlocking the state’s untapped economic and agricultural capacity and planning strategically rather than improvising through political chance.
He stressed that his allegiance is to the state as a whole, not to particular political clans or factions, promising leadership that embraces every community and generation.
Showunmi identified five pillars requiring deliberate leadership in the years ahead: capitalising on the state’s proximity to Lagos, creating sustainable opportunities for a growing population, modernising Ogun’s intellectual heritage, providing a safe environment for residents and investors and developing for the needs of tomorrow.
Showunmi challenged Ogun residents to consider: “Who is best prepared to carry the responsibility of shaping the state’s future?”
He asserted that ambition-driven leadership centres on the officeholder, whereas duty-driven leadership centres on the people. “In 2027, Ogun must choose duty. And I stand ready to serve,” he affirmed.
