FG approves N4bn take-off funds for Tinubu Polytechnic, Epe science varsity

The Federal Government has approved a total of N4bn as take-off grants for two newly established tertiary institutions — the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, in Lagos State.

Each institution will receive N2bn to support their early-stage operations.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development on Thursday during the inauguration of principal officers appointed to head the institutions, according to Arise News.

Those inaugurated include Prof. Nosiru Onibon, who will serve as the pioneer Rector of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja; Prof. Adeola Oshikoya, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe; and Dr Angela Ajala, who assumed office as the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education.

While presenting their appointment letters in Abuja, Alausa said the creation of the institutions aligns with the Federal Government’s plan to widen access to tertiary education and strengthen the country’s capacity in science, technology and innovation.

“Every child in this country deserves access to the highest quality education comparable to global standards. The appointees were carefully selected based on their record of service and achievements across Nigeria’s educational institutions.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. You have been chosen from millions of Nigerians to serve your country, and this recognition extends to your families as well,” the minister said.

Alausa also stated that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to building a stronger education system capable of producing the skilled workforce required for national development.

He explained that the N2bn allocated to each institution is intended to help them put in place basic academic and administrative structures as they begin operations.

The minister urged the newly appointed leaders to provide the kind of leadership that would define the institutions’ vision and ensure their long-term growth.

According to him, the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe and the new polytechnic in Abuja were strategically sited to maximise the economic and human resources available in their respective regions.

He added that the institutions are expected to prioritise research and development in key areas such as technological innovation, renewable energy, climate change, disaster risk management and other fields considered critical to national development.

Alausa also congratulated Ajala on her appointment as Executive Secretary of the NCCE, emphasising the vital role of teacher education in strengthening Nigeria’s overall education system.
