Leading Stories: INEC moves to integrate artificial intelligence into Nigeria’s elections

NRTC WEEKLY reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a step towards the 2027 general elections, launching a strategic workshop aimed at developing a regulatory framework for the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The three-day workshop, which began on Monday in Lagos, is expected to produce a clear roadmap for deploying emerging technologies to improve transparency, efficiency and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

In his welcome address, Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aboyomi Salami, represented by Administrative Secretary Oluyemi Adeyemi-Showunmi, described the initiative as a timely response to rapid global technological change.

He noted that the commission was building on the gains of earlier digital innovations such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), both of which had strengthened transparency and boosted voter confidence in recent elections

Sports: Senegal FA set to appeal CAF decision stripping AFCON 2025 title

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that the Senegalese Football Federation has strongly condemned the dramatic decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Committee to overturn the outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, in a development that has sent shockwaves across the footballing world.

On Tuesday, and as earlier reported by News Round The Clock, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled in favour of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, awarding the final to Morocco national football team by forfeiture, with a 3–0 scoreline.

The decision effectively strips the Senegal national football team of a 1–0 victory secured after extra time in the original encounter.

According to CAF, the ruling followed a review of events during the final, where Senegal players reportedly walked off the pitch in protest over refereeing decisions.

The Appeals Committee determined that the conduct breached Articles 82 and 84 of the competition’s regulations, leading to the forfeiture and subsequent reassignment of the title.
