Adesina, AfDB President, ‘not running for 2023 Presidency’

Akinwumi Adesina

President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has ruled himself out of the 2023 Presidential race in Nigeria.

Dr Adesina made his position known in a statement on Tuesday, after months of calls for him to join the race and after a group bought the presidential nomination form for the All Progressives Congress for him.

While I am deeply honoured, humbled and grateful for all the incredible goodwill, kindness, and confidence, my current responsibilities at this time do not allow me to accept to considered,” the statement by Adesina read in part.

“I remain fully engaged and committed to the mission that Nigeria, Africa, and all the non-African shareholders of the African Development Bank have given me for Africa’s development.

“I remain fully focused on the mission of supporting the accelerated development and economic integration of Africa.”

Meanwhile, Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers on Saturday, May 14, said he would end banditry in six months, if elected as the president in 2023.

Wike, a presidential hopeful on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the declaration in a press statement issued by Mr Kelvin Ebiri, his Special Adviser on Media in Port Harcourt.

Speaking at a meeting with party delegates from Ogun State at Abeokuta, he vowed to stamp out banditry in the first six months of his presidency.

Wike was accompanied to Ogun by Oyo State’s Gov. Seyi Makinde, his PDP counterpart in the Southwest,

He assured that his administration would provide the logistics and gadgets necessary for security agencies to expeditiously end banditry in the country if elected president.

Wike said that he would prioritise the protection of lives and property of every Nigerian.

The governor reiterated that he remained committed to the ideals of the PDP and would never leave it for another political party under any circumstance.

In his remarks, Gov. Makinde urged the PDP delegates to support Gov. Wike to actualise his presidential aspiration.

Makinde expressed optimism that Gov. Wike would win PDP’s ticket and subsequently the 2023 presidential election.
