Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed why he will miss Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures this June. The Nottingham Forest forward confirmed his withdrawal was due to personal commitments.
The lanky striker had been expected to feature in the Unity Cup and high-profile friendlies. However, he chose to step aside despite being in strong form recently.
Awoniyi has built a reputation as a clinical finisher in England’s top flight, and his consistency continues to stand out even when injuries disrupt his rhythm.
Notably, he recently marked his 100th appearance for Nottingham Forest in style when he scored twice in a commanding 3-1 win away at Chelsea.
Although he has often played a supporting role, his goal return remains impressive. His efficiency in front of goal makes him a dependable attacking option.
Speaking with SportsBoom, Awoniyi made his position clear regarding the national team.
“I was supposed to be in the Super Eagles camp, but I opted out because of personal reasons I have to attend to,” Awoniyi said.
Depth, competition, and confidence drive Eagles forward
Despite his absence, Awoniyi expressed confidence in the squad selected for the matches. He stressed that the team possesses enough quality to deliver strong performances.

“We have lots of talents in the Super Eagles, so for me, everyone that is in the team for the June friendlies is as good as me, just as I’m as good as them,” the U-17 World Cup winner added.
