Insecurity thrives as Zabarmari mourns. Any end in sight?

Insecurity

Insecurity in the country is increasing at an alarming rate and is a cause for worry for everyone. The north is fast becoming a den for terrorist attacks and it is even more disheartening because an end is not in sight.

Gradually, the citizens are losing their confidence in a country they once pride themselves in.

‘‘I pledge to Nigeria my country; to……..serve Nigeria with all my strength; to defend her unity and uphold her honour and glory. So help me God.’’

These lines from the national pledge are often recited by her citizens with so much zeal and commitment. However, with the unending ills travailing the country (most of them artificial), most people are now without hope.

On Saturday, November 28, 2020, about 43 farmers were reportedly murdered in Zabarmari community in Jere local government area of Borno state. This attack is one of numerous cases of Boko haram insurgency in the north.

Sadly, these dastardly acts by the terrorist group seem to be uncontrollable for the government. Perhaps, there are forces behind the attacks that the people are not aware of.

The citizens are tired of living in fear. In some areas of the north, life is no longer the same. Bandits who thrive on human massacre have overpowered whole communities in parts of Kaduna and Zamfara States.

Who will the people run to? Is there hope in sight? Will the people raise their heads with pride and pledge their commitment to their country again? But most importantly, who are the sponsors of boko haram?

Reactions trail the sad event

The farmers who were murdered in Borno State were going about their lawful activities when they met their death. This sad event has gathered reactions from various quarters.

In its reaction, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) stated that the insecurity in the north is becoming too much. For that, the government must stand up to its responsibility in protecting her people.

The presidency has also condemned the attacks. Media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu said that the presidency has sent condolence messages to the families of the victims of the Zabarmari attacks. President Buhari stated that the attack by the deadly boko haram sect is senseless.

Furthermore, many Nigerians have lent their voices to the plight of the north. The general consensus is for the north to express its anger to the government with the same vigour with which it addresses issues on decency and religion.

According to some commentators, when the north says that enough is enough, then the country would feel its pulse and change will be imminent.

The Zabarmari massacre is one attack too many. Besides, Boko Haram does not value lives. Whatever their aim of constituting a nuisance in the nation is, it must not be tolerated by the government.

Consequently, the government must see to the restoration of normalcy in the north by tackling insecurity head-on. More so, it must do everything in its power to ensure that the pride of the people in their beloved country is restored.
