Leading Stories: Tinubu passes the bill to revert to the Old National Anthem

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Nigerians initially believed the bill to revert to the old national anthem, ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’, was just one of many being considered by the Senate. However, when President Bola Tinubu signed the bill into law, the reality of the change became clear to Nigerians.

This decision elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians, ranging from outright rejection and criticism to complimentary remarks. School pupils have eagerly embraced learning the newly revised anthem, while some youth have expressed frustration over the difficulty in adapting. Older adults might simply need to refresh their memory to recall the new anthem.

Some Nigerians have criticised the decision, arguing that the country has more pressing issues to address than changing the national anthem. One major point of contention is worth considering: the newly adopted national anthem was composed by a colonial master, unlike the previous one, which was written by a Nigerian.

NRTC WEEKLY learned that Nigerians are questioning whether the country is regressing to the past or progressing under Mr Tinubu’s leadership.

Politics: Tinubu’s one year in office gets negative reviews from Nigerians

NRTC WEEKLY gathered that Mr Tinubu’s first day in office was the last time Nigerians bought fuel at the lowest price in the past year.

Over this year, Nigerians have faced one challenge after another, including fuel scarcity, surging inflation rates, the devaluation of the Naira, high food prices, and more under Mr. Tinubu’s administration.

Accusations have been directed at Mr Tinubu for his perceived ineffectiveness in leadership. Some of his supporters argue that the economic decline would have occurred regardless of who was in power. Overall, Nigerians are dissatisfied with the Tinubu administration.

Business: NLC, TUC refuses to settle with N60,000 as minimum wage

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have raised the stakes and are not backing down anytime soon. There have been discussions about the new minimum wage, which the NLC has proposed at 498,000 naira. However, the federal government is not in agreement with this proposal, NRTC WEEKLY learned.

Negotiating the minimum wage down from N498,000 to N60,000 has infuriated the NLC and TUC, prompting them to declare an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 3. The NLC and TUC have taken their mantra, ‘No gree for anybody’, very seriously.

NRTC WEEKLY learned that raising the minimum wage might be beneficial if it does not lead to an increase in the inflation rate. This is the only way the money can have a meaningful impact.

The issue has become a tug-of-war between the NLC and the government. Will the NLC and TUC achieve their goal, or will the increase make any difference? I suppose we will have to wait and see.
